One of the greatest gifts we can give children isn't just a love of reading—it's the confidence to believe they have stories worth telling.
This summer, I had the joy of watching a room full of young writers transform simple ideas into imaginative stories. There was laughter, teamwork, plenty of silly moments, and, most importantly, the realization that every child has a unique voice.
The best part? You don't need expensive supplies or hours of planning to create that same magic at home.
Try this simple six-part story outline:
Who is your main character?
Where does the story take place?
What problem does the character face?
What happens next? (The adventure!)
How is the problem solved?
What lesson did the character learn?
Once the story is finished, let your child illustrate each page, design a colorful cover, and proudly write "By" followed by their name. Staple the pages together, and just like that—they've published their very first book.
Will it be perfect? Probably not.
Will it be something they'll treasure for years? Absolutely.
This summer, trade a little screen time for story time. You may be surprised to discover that the next great author is already living in your home—just waiting for someone to hand them a blank page.
